Called the Grosse Cloche (Big Bell) for good reason, Porte Saint-Éloi is one of Bordeaux’s last medieval vestiges – one of the city’s original gateways, constructed in the 15th century. With its twin towers, coat of arms and a bell weighing more than seven tonnes, the imposing belfry has lost none of its splendour over the centuries. Like many buildings from the Middle Ages, this symbol of Bordeaux long served as a prison. Visitors today can enter the jails where young people were locked up for minor offences. Thanks to the guided tour, you’ll soon know everything about this peculiar place.
