Founded in 1949, this major institution is one of the largest museums in the country. Its collections embrace a vast period, running from prehistory to modern art. Its 200,000 works and eclectic objects, paintings, jewelry, miniatures and textiles trace 5,000 years of history. Among the masterpieces of the National Museum of New Delhi includes the Buddha relics from the fifth century BC and sublime statues of deities such as Shiva Nataraja and Garuda.
