Riga's Churches & cathedrals

Nestled amid the Art Nouveau glories of Riga's historic centre are countless religious buildings that demand a second look. Dating from 1211, the Lutheran Riga Cathedral features a striking combination of architectural styles and a renowned organ with 6,718 pipes. The redbrick Saint James Cathedral is distinguished by its towering spire, while the five-domed Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ is said to be the largest Orthodox cathedral in the Baltic region. A lift transports visitors up to the viewing platform of Saint Peter's Church, which hosts occasional concerts and other events.
