This central square is not only the perfect base for sightseeing, but also an attraction in its own right. Its centrepiece is the Mariensäule – a column dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Protector of Bavaria. Surrounding it are impressive buildings, including the picturesque New Town Hall and the Old Town Hall with a toy museum in its tower. The Rathaus-Glockenspiel puts on a show daily at 11am and noon, with chiming bells and 32 life-size figurines re-enacting scenes from Bavaria’s history. Nearby is the iconic Frauenkirche. Shops, cafés and restaurants, along with the famous Christmas Market, make Marienplatz a year-round draw.
