A concert in the Kölner Philharmonie, opened in 1986, is a unique treat for the ears. The hall, modelled on an amphitheatre, is located under the Museum Ludwig, and is distinguished not only by its harmonious architectural design but also by its almost perfect acoustics. Up to 2,000 music lovers can experience classical symphonies as well as jazz, pop and folk performances. The two resident orchestras, the WDR Symphony Orchestra and the Gürzenich Orchestra, present as many as 400 concerts a year. There are often free half-hour lunchtime concerts on Thursdays – a great opportunity to unwind. Selected concerts from the Philharmonie are streamed live at www.philharmonie.tv.
