For the visitor to Munich, there’s really no getting around the Hofbräuhaus. The most famous pub in the world has been attracting young and old for over 400 years. There’s room for up to 4,500 thirsty guests in its maze of rustic rooms, including 1,000 in the Schwemme, the vast beer hall on the ground floor. Here you sit at long, polished tables and enjoy yourself over pork knuckles and a litre glass (a Maß) of beer. The crowd is international, the mood is boisterous and the decor a blend of art and folksy kitsch. In summer when the weather’s fine, guests pour out into the charming beer garden around the Löwenbrunnen fountain.
