Gandhi Smriti

Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life at Birla House, now known as the Gandhi Smriti, and it was here that he was assassinated in 1948. Located in the tranquility of a garden, the monument is very moving. Built by architect G. Bhuta Vanu, local people also come here to meditate. On a slab of black marble is inscribed, "Hey Ram" ("Oh my god”), recalling Mahatma Gandhi’s last words. In the background, a flame burns perpetually, symbolizing the universal ideas of this great Indian pacifist politician. Tip: Visitors are asked to remove their shoes upon entry.
