Royal Fort of Sainte-Marguerite Island

Since the 17th century, the Royal Fort of Sainte-Marguerite Island has occupied the largest of the Lérins islands. It’s difficult to imagine battles and prisons in this idyllic setting. Yet it is here that the legendary Man in the Iron Mask was held, whose mysterious identity has for centuries inspired the wildest rumours and numerous works. Today, the sight of the fortification perched atop a sheer drop into the Mediterranean is a visitor’s delight. Before boarding the return ferry, admire the city and the Bay of Cannes, the Alps and the Estérel Massif from the terrace of the Maritime Museum.
