Dashanzi 798 Art District

Since the 2000s, Beijing’s artist community has chosen the Chaoyang district for its home, making the 798 Art Zone an epicentre of contemporary art in China. In the 640 hectares of this former military plant with unique architecture there are galleries where Wim Delvoye or Ai Wei Wei display their work and the studios of other prominent Chinese artists. Cultural associations also have their premises next to fashion and design boutiques. Festivals bring this hotspot of alternative and avant garde cultures to life, notably the 798 International Art Festival, launched by artist Huang Rui, or the 798 International Tattoo Convention.
