Antigone

Antigone’s modern harmony contrasts with Écusson’s medieval streets. In the 1980s, Montpellier wanted to expand and build new infrastructures. The project was entrusted to Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, who imagined an entirely new neighbourhood whose central axis would evoke the majestic perspective of the Promenade du Peyrou. In Antigone, a succession of Greco-Roman buildings stands in perfect symmetry. Between the Émile Zola multimedia library and Esplanade de l’Europe is Place de Thessalie and its fountain with massive half-immersed busts. In summer, at Place du Nombre d’Or, children play among jets of water that spring directly from the ground.
