The Shard

The Shard is a skyscraper housing offices and luxury apartments. Initially called The London Bridge Tower, it was renamed after critics referred to it as a “shard of glass through the heart of historic London.” Designed by Renzo Piano, it towers up 309 tall, and its futurist structure was inspired by the nearby railway lines. Two floors are open to the public, boasting one of the most stunning views the capital has to offer. Opened in 2013, The Shard is the tallest tower in the European Union and was recognised as the new emblem of London by judges of the Emporis Skyscraper Awards in 2014.
