The Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is a British landmark. A world-class attraction and leader in scientific research, the museum is home to a plethora of unique collections and boasts unrivalled expertise. Whether you’re visiting London for the first time or returning after some time away, The Natural History Museum is worth a visit. Situated in South Kensington, The Natural History Museum first opened its doors in 1881. Alfred Waterhouse designed the building itself when Sir Richard Owen – then curator of the British Museum’s natural history collection – became unhappy with the lack of space to house the ever-growing collection. Waterhouse designed the entire building in resilient terracotta, which has led to an architecturally stunning example of Romanesque style. The Natural History Museum is considered a work of art in itself, and has rightly earnt its place amongst the most iconic buildings of the capital. The Natural History Museum is home to many impressive permanent collections, including the globally renowned Oceans, Human Evolution, Space, Dinosaurs, and British Wildlife exhibits. Whatever your reason for visiting the museum, there are very few questions left unanswered and plenty of knowledgeable scientists and volunteers around to help if you want to know more. Uncover the history of life on earth in a day at this incredible museum. With so much to see, visitors should give themselves plenty of time to avoid missing anything. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, be sure to take a stroll around the museum’s five-acre gardens. The gardens are transforming into a biologically diverse, accessible and welcoming open-air gallery which will aim to inspire and encourage people to care about the natural world.
