Half hidden in a bamboo forest, the 400 steps up to the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery are studded with a whole host of statues, all of them unique. Once you reach the top, you can admire the surrounding area from a nine-floor pagoda. Further on, the huge temple that has given its name to this collection of Buddhas actually houses nearly 12,000 golden statuettes. They cover the walls, from floor to ceiling. Visited by many worshippers, this temple is imbued with a unique atmosphere, somewhere between religious fervour and smoky incense. At once mystical and fascinating.
