Schildergasse
The 534m-long Schildergasse – the showpiece street of Cologne’s Old Town – in 1966 became the city’s first pedestrian zone. Alongside the big department stores, shoppers will find plenty of sporting goods retailers and opportunities to purchase shoes. From an architectural perspective, it’s worthwhile to visit the clothing chain Peek & Cloppenburg in the Weltstadthaus. The ‘whale’, as locals call the globular glass building, was designed by Renzo Piano and has won several awards. Before taking in the iconic Bierbrunnen (beer well) fountain on the corner of Gürzenichstrasse, travellers should treat themselves to a snack at the historic Café Riese.
