Reunification Palace

The site of Reunification Palace, formerly known as Independence Palace, became the centre of power in the 1860s, with French, Japanese and South Vietnamese rulers taking up residence in turn. In 1975, a tank famously crashed through the gates, announcing the arrival of the North Vietnamese. The current building dates from 1966. Visitors can tour the meeting and reception rooms, living quarters and basement war rooms. The Palace retains a definite Cold War vibe, offset by kitsch 1970s décor, including a barrel-shaped bar and time-warp furniture in the entertainment lounge.
