The museum, which celebrated its 40th birthday in 2016, was donated to the city by Peter and Irene Ludwig, and is a world-renowned exhibition space for modern and contemporary art. In addition to outstanding artworks by Emil Nolde, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Dix and other German Expressionists, there is also the largest Pop Art collection outside the US, including art by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, as well as the world’s third-largest Picasso collection, with works from all of his creative phases. A specialist section is devoted to photography. The Museum is located directly adjacent to Cologne Cathedral in an extravagant building complex from the 1980s that stands out thanks to its distinctive, zinc-clad shed roofs.
