The city’s cultural life owes its reputation to such institutions as the Fabre Museum. Founded in 1828, Montpellier’s largest museum is also among the most important ones in France outside of Paris. It is named in honour of Baron Fabre, whose personal collection comprised the first exhibit. Later sources of art include other collectors, the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay. This must-see institution is home to many Flemish, neoclassic and modern works. One facet that distinguishes it from other museums is its decorative arts collection, including the furnishings that belonged to the former residents of this vast mansion.
