Located, as the name suggests, in former slaughterhouses dating back to 1823, ‘Les Abattoirs’ Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art contains an impressive collection of some 4,000 works of art from the middle of the 20th century to the present day. Among the museum’s most illustrious works is Picasso’s The Remains of Minotaur in Harlequin Costume dating from 1936, alongside masterpieces by Hans Bellmer, Jean Dubuffet, Marcel Duchamp, Hans Hartung and Robert Mapplethorpe. Les Abattoirs also offers areas for relaxing and socialising, such as an excellent bookshop specialising in modern art, an auditorium and a restaurant.
