The former home and studio of portrait painter Franz von Lenbach is considered one of the world’s foremost museums for its collection of Der Blauer Reiter (The Blue Rider) works. The artist collective, founded in 1911 by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, also included Paul Klee, August Macke, Alexej von Jawlensky and Gabriele Münter. Another focus of the gallery is post-WWI art, especially by representatives of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement such as Franz Radziwill and Christian Schad. There are also works by Joseph Beuys and other artists from the era since 1945, including Gerhard Richter and Isa Genzken.
