Occupying a 14th-century tower that is part of Riga's old city walls, this huge, modern military museum offers a deep dive into Latvian history.
The collection of more than 25,000 items spans 9th-century warriors to the Soviet occupation of 1945-91. The Powder Tower in which part of the museum is housed once held 11 cannons, weapons stores and a prison and torture chamber. Despite the building's grizzly past, its atmospheric rooms offer a thought-provoking insight into Latvian history and the country's struggles for independence.
