Japan Bridge

A masterpiece by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, the Japan Bridge has linked the Kupka and Pacific towers since 1994. Also known as Passerelle Kupka, the structure is reminiscent of traditional Japanese footbridges and was inspired by that country’s aesthetic of simplicity and lightness. This pedestrian-only walkway, measuring 100m long, is open to the public. A glass arch covers the structure, protecting people from the elements while allowing them to observe the urban ballet of La Défense. The shape and colour of the two red-steel arches bring to mind Calder’s Red Spider, an emblematic work in the district.
