The city’s Chinese community built this fascinating Taoist temple in 1909. Many locals come here to worship, as evidenced by the haze of incense. The pagoda holds undeniable interest for the curious visitor: the interior is populated with numerous carved and drawn images of animals, mythical creatures, and Buddhist and Taoist deities. Most imposing of all is the statue of the Jade Emperor, which presides over the main hall. The tortoise pond within the grounds is the reason the temple is also known as the Tortoise Pagoda.
