Old Montpellier gets its name from the area’s layout, which resembles an escutcheon – a heraldic shield. Écusson has largely preserved its medieval heritage. Walking through winding streets, stairways and buildings made of stones from Castries, visitors discover delightful and lively squares. Far from being stuck in the past, the old town is replete with all types of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Part of their charm comes from vaulted ceilings, wooden beams, carved stones and other architectural elements. The historic heart is home to several museums and monuments, such as La Panacée and the impressive Sainte-Anne and Saint-Pierre churches.
