The Centre National d'Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou is more commonly referred to as “Beaubourg” by Parisians. It was built in 1977 in the neighbourhood of the same name in the 4th arrondissement, between Les Halles and the Marais. The modern architecture of the impressive building is the work of Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers and Gianfranco Franchini. Across its 6 floors, connected to each other by an escalator that’s actually outside the building, the Centre Pompidou boasts a wonderful collection of more than 100,000 works of art from the 20th and 21st centuries, from Georges Braque to Mona Hatoum. Not far away, the Stravinsky Fountain by Tinguely and Niki de Saint-Phalle is another artistic treat.
