Saint Pierre Cathedral

It’s impossible to miss the twin towers that frame the entrance to Saint-Pierre Cathedral. Built in the 14th century and rebuilt until the 19th century, depending on the winds of religious wars, this unique fortified church is the city’s largest Gothic monument. It served as a chapel for the former adjoining Benedictine monastery, whose cloisters would later house the oldest medical school in the West, established in the 12th century, and whose creation led Montpellier to become a centre of knowledge. With its two pillars connected by a vault to the rest of the structure, the porch is particularly impressive.
