Abandoned in the 1970s following decades of operation, the Brisbane Powerhouse power plant on the outskirts of Brisbane’s New Farm found a new artistic lease of life in 2000 when it was transformed into a major local arts center. The imposing building retains its cachet to this day, where some of its original facilities have been maintained, coexisting with the graffiti of underground artists. While the building alone is worth visiting, it’s also worth extending the tour to see an exhibition in the basement gallery or a concert at its alternative theatre. Alto Restaurant & Bar also offers beautiful views overlooking the Brisbane river.
